Purpose
To ensure the safe handling, removal, and destruction of outdated, expired, or otherwise unusable medical supplies, equipment, and instruments in accordance with all applicable federal, national, state, and local regulations, including those governing healthcare waste management in the State of Florida.
Policy Statement
This facility maintains strict procedures to identify, remove, and properly dispose of any medical supplies, equipment, or instruments that are outdated, expired, damaged, or no longer compliant with current clinical or regulatory standards. All disposal activities will be conducted in accordance with:
Federal regulations, including applicable OSHA, EPA, and FDA requirements
National standards for healthcare waste management
Florida state laws and administrative codes governing biomedical waste and equipment disposal
Local ordinances and waste‑handling requirements
Scope
This policy applies to all clinical and non‑clinical staff involved in the storage, handling, inspection, or disposal of medical supplies, equipment, or instruments.
Procedures
Routine Inspection: All treatment areas, storage rooms, supply closets, and equipment inventories will be inspected regularly to identify outdated or expired items.
Staff must immediately remove any item found to be expired, damaged, or otherwise unsuitable for patient care.
Segregation and Labeling: Outdated items will be clearly labeled and stored in a designated “Do Not Use—Pending Disposal” area until proper disposal is completed. Items classified as biomedical waste will be handled according to the Florida Department of Health's biomedical waste standards.
Destruction and Disposal: Outdated medical supplies, instruments, and equipment will be destroyed or disposed of only through approved methods consistent with federal, state, and local regulations. Disposal vendors must be licensed and compliant with Florida biomedical waste and equipment disposal requirements.
